7-17-04 Sewer Service is Expensive and Tough to Deliver

Oconee’s officials made a policy decision to allocate the small amount of capacity we have and THEN DECIDED TO STUDY IT! They have the Draft Wastewater Plan (with a $ 126 Million Price Tag) but do not want to discuss it until after the July 20, 2004 primary. Local newspapers have let them get by with it. They have been giving glib assurances that defy reality. ............................................ In time, the truth will out and citizens will realize the lack of planning, foresight and responsible decision making that went into Oconee’s residential sewer policy.

'Sewer summit' is a crucial meeting for county's future

One of the most important meetings of this century where Hall County is concerned will take place from …. Friday. If all goes well, the meeting will result in decisions that have a significant effect on Hall County's future. …..is open to the public. ….. most people refer to it as the "sewer summit."

Hall County has 10 government entities that are involved or may become involved in sewer service. No one entity is responsible for sewer service for all of the county so confusion, misunderstanding or misrepresentation is rampant, …….the sewer service problem now has many conflicting stories that cannot be easily deciphered.Stories about promises and contracts vary according to the source, and it's difficult to determine who or what is correct.

Members of the Chamber of Commerce know as well as anyone the importance of good sewer lines and wastewater management. Such service is a major link in a strong infrastructure, which is tied to a strong economy. A good infrastructure determines whether your area is attractive to new industry that brings in jobs and new taxes, which provide still more services.

To try to increase cooperation and reach a place where major beneficial decisions can be made about sewer service in this county, the chamber has given the 10 government entities each five minutes to explain their present wastewater services and future plans……………..

The governments have been asked to answer the following four questions in their presentations:

-       In general, what areas of Hall County do you now serve with wastewater services?

-        In general, what are your plans for expanding wastewater services in the next 10 and 20 years?

-        Where will your next expansions be?

-        What is your timetable for expansion?

A large map of the county will be available for the presenters to point out where their service areas will be……...Tommy Furlow, director of the Gwinnett County public utilities and former director of Gainesville public utilities will lead the 10 governments in a group discussion. Furlow was asked to participate because he has knowledge of past sewer actions and inactions in Hall………..

Much planning has gone into this important meeting, and the meeting itself is an important service to the citizens of Hall County. ……….Members of the Chamber of Commerce know as well as anyone the importance of good sewer lines and wastewater management. Such service is a major link in a strong infrastructure, which is tied to a strong economy.
