Mayor Lockwood not to seek re-election

Commissioner Bob Moore offers himself in mayoral RACE

At the closing of the City Commission meeting on Monday evening, April 14, 2003, a surprise announcement was made by Mayor Max Lockwood.

In a prepared statement, the mayor stated, "Those who have the privilege to serve in elective office will always remember the friends and neighbors who supported their efforts to serve. My association with the men and women who work with our City of Douglas has been one of the highlights of my life.

As I complete this six years of service as your mayor, I now turn my thoughts to other challenges. I could not have served with a better, harder working group of City Commissioners as we have worked together to help build a better community. I pray God’s blessing on each of you."

AVOC COMMENT:   I have known Max Lockwood for several years.  There is no more public-spirited individual in Georgia.    He has been the point person for the improvement and development of the U S 441 Corridor that traverses the entire state from N C to FLA.  It goes through Coffee County as well as Morgan, Oconee, Clarke etc.

Max has been a positive influence and a perennial optimist.  He as well as many of us "veterans" find it disappointing that the transportation funding in GA has suffered so much in recent years.   U S 441 is an important corridor for this state.   If and when the four-laning is completed, Max Lockwood needs to be appreciated for his tireless efforts for all of us for the last ten years or more.

AVOC wishes you well in retirement, Max!
