7-11-05 Status of the Oconee County Road System

A good road system is critical in a growing county. Oh, I am aware that some say paved roads bring more growth and in some ways they do. However, they bring a better development standard than subdivisions on dirt roads. Oconee’s location is attractive to growth. It’s progress in the 80’s and 90’s with improved roads and water and sewer brought a higher quality development and businesses…..

Oconee County Road System

.

By Wendell Dawson, Editor, AVOC, Inc.

.

According to the county’s website, there were about 46 miles of dirt roads in Oconee County in 2003.It was about this much when I left office December 31, 2000.It was over a hundred miles in January 1989 when I began my 12 years as Commission Chair.   The Previous administration (Choyce Johnson) had paved many dirt roads in the late 80’s.

.

Since 2000, there has been little change. Some less than pavement surface has been put on some roads:Tappan Spur, etc. However, it has already deteriorated and will not stand up without further paving.

Oconee is not spending near enough on annual maintenance.   At one time, the Road Department and Law Enforcement were the largest budget items in the General Budget.SPLOST revenues were also used to deal with the out-dated roads. In recent years, costs of Administration and Parks and Recreation have taken a larger and larger amount of the county’s budget.

.

If we do not return to a policy of investing in infrastructure, we will be having more and more gridlock and accidents on the two-lane country roads that are now hosting expensive homes and fancy entrances.   Deteriorating conditions of the roads are very apparent to even the casual observer.

.

A couple of years ago, relating to a SPLOST campaign, a slick-page booklet was published by the Commissioners showing a new road surface treatment for dirt roads.A picture of Tappan Spur Road was shown after this less expensive ‘paving project’.   Unfortunately, Tappan Spur’s paving has not held up and is “coming apart”.See recent photo and the action to approve patching it this year..
