A Watkinsville Neighbor and Special Friend – Joe Ann Willoughby Mitchell

By Wendell Dawson, Editor, AVOC, Inc.

Joe Ann Mitchell recently retired after 42 years of faithful service to St Mary’s Hospital of Athens, Georgia.  She worked most of that time in the newborn nursery and saw countless babies and made countless friends.

A few years back, Joe Ann was diagnosed with cancer.  She has fought it now for several years.  In spite of chemo and other stressful treatments, she has kept her cheerful attitude and personality.

In her life, she has reached countless persons and areas of life.  She is a faithful member of the Willoughby family.  As a single parent, she raised her daughter, Laura Ann Mitchell. Joe Ann was determined that Laura get a good education and to become a nurse.  Laura graduated from Athens Academy and the Emory School of Nursing.  For several years, she has worked in the cardiac unit of Crawford Long Hospital.  Laura Ann is the “apple of her mother’s eye” and rightfully so.   Laura Ann is a faithful daughter who has stood by her and is very proud of the recognitions her mother has received in connection with her retirement.

Since, 1972, we have been neighbors on the New High Shoals Road.  We built our houses on the Bishop Farm.  For a number of years, we were “next door” neighbors.   We now have a few intervening houses with the coming of Bishop’s Vineyard.  We talk and visit often.  She has always kept an eye on things and fed our pets when we were away.  Betty waters her flowers when she is gone and drives her to the doctor and for treatments.  She is a dear friend.

Joe Ann has been a life-long and faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church in Watkinsville.  She performs several duties including flowers for the fellowship hall.  In February 2004, she posed with another Watkinsville Institution, Burnell Brown, on the occasion of his 90th birthday.

Article captured Mitchell as the 'rare angel' she is

Wendell and Betty Dawson

We tremendously enjoyed Wayne Ford's Sept. 4 article, "A Lifetime of Giving" about Joe Ann Mitchell. Many folks in this area know Mitchell and consider her a friend.

Joe Ann Mitchell is a caring and giving person who has helped countless folks over the decades. Not only has she helped mothers and babies but she has helped many folks at time of sickness and death.

Joe Ann has been our neighbor and friend for over 30 years. We trust and love her completely. She feeds our pet and waters flowers when we are away for vacation or trips. We help with her flowers, etc. when she is gone. She was present during the approaching death of family members. She always visited and spoke to relatives who were in the hospital.

Joe Ann has a rare motivation, determination and pride in helping folks. She did a great job raising her daughter, Laura Ann. Joe Ann is a "rare angel" in the living world. We love and appreciate her very much.
