By Wendell Dawson, Editor, AVOC, Inc

Joe Ann Mitchell’s valiant and long struggle with cancer ended at 12:35 AM on New Year’s Day, 2006.She died at her home with her daughter, Laura Ann, and sister, Sarah Willoughby, present.

This Special Lady was known and loved by 1,000’s of Northeast Georgians. She had worked for over forty years in the nursery at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens.   The Hospital held a Joe Ann Mitchell Day in May 2003 that was attended by 100’s of area residents.  She was again recognized by St Mary’s in August 2005 when the new nursery for newborns was named after this faithful nurse and employee.

Joe Ann and her family were faithful and active members of Bethel Baptist Church in Watkinsville.  She was always helping folks in the community and remembering special occasions.  In early 2004, she arranged for a photo session with friend, Burnell Brown, on his 90th Birthday.  On August 1, 2005, she arranged a birthday lunch for neighbor and friend, Dr. A. Wilson White.

Joe Ann Mitchell was a caring person with much energy and determination.  It is fitting that she lived until the New Year was here.  It is very symbolic of her indomitable spirit.

Joe Ann Mitchell was a rare and special person.  She will be missed by many folks, including her neighbors on the New High Shoals Road, Watkinsville, Georgia.

May God keep Laura, Sarah and the rest of the Willoughby Family in his care as they adjust to life without Mother, Sister and Aunt.
