Nursing home residents are still people and need cards and visits

By Wendell Dawson, Editor, AVOC, Inc.

Over the years, I have visited many ‘nursing homes’ to see relatives, old friends and clients.   There is a difference among the homes.  Some are more of an ‘Assisted Living” kind that can be pleasant.  There are others that seem to be populated with Medicaid patients and can be very depressing.

On occasions, I have described some as ‘human landfills’.   Some residents are obviously “out of it” and are being cared for but only physically exist.   Many never have visitors or cards.  They are the “forgotten people”.

At some point our nation and society must address issues related to nursing homes.  It is an expensive part of State and Federal Budgets.   Just cutting benefits is not the answer.   That just lowers the quality of care and environment.

Meanwhile, all of us can get some names and addresses and at least send cards.   Visits are very much appreciated.  We all should do it more.

Make effort to go visit residents of nursing homes

A Savannah Resident

May 14-20 is Nursing Home Week. Very little recognition is usually given to this.

This letter is to encourage friends and relatives of those residing in nursing homes to go visit them. I worked in a nursing home for a number of years, and my mother was a patient in one for over a year. These residents are so often "forgotten people."

If you don't have a relative or a friend in a nursing home, go visit someone anyway. It will truly make their day.
