3-13-07 Oconee Road Projects and Priorities taking back seat to Development Projects

Oh, we are getting vibes about the shortage of funds at DOT. HOGWASH! It is a matter of priority. Governor Perdue has found money for other areas. Rep Bob Smith seems to be pushing the Jennings Mill project ahead of Mars Hill. Chairman Melvin Davis seems to push projects for “friends” and contributors. Oconee’s future is being short changed.

Oconee Road Projects and Priorities taking back seat to Development Projects

.

By Wendell Dawson, Editor, AVOC, Inc.

.

Oconee Road Projects like the improvements to Experiment Road- Mars Hill Corridor, Widening of U S 441 between Watkinsville & Madison, Connector between GA 15 and U S 441 south of Watkinsville and the upgrading of GA 316 seem to have lost priority and boosting in the Melvin Davis Administrations.

.

While the listed projects are heavily traveled and have been “in the works” for years, they seem to have fallen even further behind.Projects connected to Developers have fared better, whether heavy traffic or not:   Jennings Mill Parkway Extension, behind Lowes over to the Oconee Connector, Accel-Decel Lanes on GA Hwy 53 for developments, a traffic light at Hog Mountain Road and Government Station Road at the property of USDA and a commercial tract acquired by Tom Little and Steve Ebert.   These two projects have merit. However, in my mind they do not rank above the Mars Hill Corridor or the GA 15 – US 441 Connector.

.

The Hog Mountain Road and Government Station Road area needs upgrading. However, the construction work seems to be enhancing the area for turn lanes etc on the Little – Ebert property.Usually the developer is required to install such improvements.

Is this disguised attempt to help some Developers with Accel-Decel Lanes for Commercial Development?

.

The Jennings Mill Connector was one of the last projects that GA DOT Commissioner Wayne Shackelford awarded us.It was at least two years behind the Experiment Road- Mars Hill Corridor Upgrade.    The Jennings Mill Parkway will allow more commercial development. However, if we have only two lane roads leading to and from the commercial nodes, I am not sure how successful they will be.   The Experiment Road- Mars Hill Corridor will become a nightmare. It will only get worse over the years.Meanwhile Melvin Davis and Company will have ridden off into the sunset and more visionary and responsible leaders will have to deal with it and “catch up”.

.

When we started the Experiment Road-Mars Hill Parkway Project in 1998, the GA DOT was excited about it.Not only would it improve the most heavily traveled corridor but would be a connection between U S 441 and GA 316.

VOTERS NEED TO ASK QUESTIONS.   NEXT TIME YOU SIT IN TRAFFIC ON EXPERIMENT ROAD- MARS HILL ROAD, PAUSE AND THANK MELVIN DAVIS, BOB SMITH and SONNY PERDUE.Their lack of vision and funding of this important project is hard to comprehend.
