Memorial Day – Oconee Veterans who made Supreme Sacrifice

.

By Wendell Dawson, Editor, AVOC, Inc

.

While most of us are enjoying a holiday and some debate politics and other issues, we all need to pause and remember people who made the Supreme Sacrifice in preserving our nation and freedom.

.

We should never forget them and their names need to be memorialized at the Oconee Veterans Memorial or at the Courthouse with the U S flag flying.

.

Many died during the Civil War and their names are memorialized on the Broad St monuments in Athens near the UGA Arch.   During the Civil War, Oconee County was a part of Clarke County.  There are numerous Oconee Family names: i. e.: Daniell, Hardigree, Fambrough, Marshall etc.   Hopefully, some group will take on a project of adding those names to the Oconee County Roll of Honor.
