Oconee ‘Power Players’ want absolute control of County – Candidates list

Observers have known for sometime that a small core of folks involved in certain organizations and political circles want to have control of the County.    They have no patience with any dissenting opinions.

This ‘power group’ knows what’s going on even when citizens and other elected officials do not know.   For a while, the ‘power group’ included Jim Ivey who was known as the Oconee Republican “Go To Man”.   Since Jim’s disappearance from the scene, it seems that Developer Tom Little et al have assumed that mantle.

.

Much of the media has been complicit or passive in the matter.   A local newspaper publisher and a commissioner were on the Board of Directors of the Oconee Veterans Memorial Organization.   Jim Ivey told me and others that he wanted to have the GOP involved in local and positive projects that would enhance the reputation of local Republicans.   As time went on, we learned that the local GOP was a closed group.   They have “milked” the Veterans Memorial for all they can.   The Memorial is a good thing.   The scandalous political activities identified with it is a blot on the county’s history.

Many citizens are still wondering what Ivey did with the misappropriated funds.   Also, where did he get the funds to repay the amount so quickly?   Commissioner Don Norris helped with that.   Chairman Davis and Commissioner Luke ‘testified” for Ivey and helped him get a real light sentence.   Was this really done out of friendship and appreciation or did Mr. Ivey know too many secrets?

These same folks and others are trying to increase their control of the County to continue out of control spending and growth.   They are blatant in their actions to elect “the team”.

Citizens can identify some of the power folks, especially developers, who own vacant land where many of their candidates’ signs are being posted.

Oconee Citizens, Taxpayers and Voters need to be alert.   We need to take our county back.    Let’s show some of these “Power Players” off stage!

If you are like me, you consider yourself a patriotic American who refuses to pass up the opportunity to vote. However, until recently I never knew who to vote for in local races where the issues are not published on FOX or CNN every night. I have in the last two years been thrust into' the local political scene enough to tell you that this year is not a year to have good people guessing at who they should vote for. On the back of this card, I've listed the candidates that are best for the future of Oconee County. I certainly don't expect you to take this card for gospel unless you really trust the person that gave it to you, but please give these candidates a good look before voting against them.

Our County Commission right now is virtually crippled by the divisive makeup of the board. The five candidates listed on the back will be able to lead more effectively than the current board. Those close to the board tell disturbing stories of Board members using their vote to make other members look bad, or to make the Chairman have to vote to break a tie. This is not leadership, it is not good for the county, and it must be stopped. Please also consider supporting these candidates financially if you are able. It takes money to run, and even a small contribution means a lot to each of them.

The school board is on the cusp of great things and truly this election will make a huge difference in the future direction of our local schools.

.

Please give credence to the candidates listed here as our school system may be the most critical piece of the puzzle for our property values, our children's education and Oconee County's future in general. With the announced retirement of Tom Dohrmann, the school superintendent, the makeup of the school board is more critical than ever and we must give the chairman of the school board every opportunity to be successful.
