Movie about “Carving Up Oconee” showing in Athens -Cine`

Celestia Sharp, who wrote a history of Bishop, GA, has filmed a documentary (Carving up Oconee) about development pressures occurring in Oconee County.  The film was made after over two years of interviews with citizens, county and city officials and former county officials.   It featured on Citizens for South Oconee County.  I was interviewed at least twice over a period of time and have short appearances in the film.

.

The film addresses concerns of many about the rapid development growth in Oconee County in recent years.   It highlights an effort by Citizens of South Oconee County to stop a truck stop at Farmington.   The rezone involved an out of town developer and gave the commissioners an opportunity to vote “one for the citizens”.   But the film does trace the process for citizens to be involved in zoning matters.

.

Celestia does a good job with the subject though it does not address other and wider efforts to slow down development in Oconee County.  It emphasizes environmentalists and to some extent, NIMBYs but it does address issues that concern a lot of Oconee County Citizens.

.

The film was shown last June to participants and is worth the effort to see.   It is in Athens this weekend at CINÉ in downtown Athens (234 West Hancock Avenue, Athens GA 30601- Old Recap Building) as part of the EcoFocus Film Festival presented by the UGA Odum School of Ecology.

.
The film is also featured at a Website with a YouTube video.

.
According to Celestia Sharp, the film is showing at CINE`, at 234 West Hancock Avenue on Saturday, October 25th at 3:00 p.m. (with panel discussion following) and again on Sunday, October 26th at 8:15 p.m.

"Individuals listed in the Greene County records from the 1780s and 1790s, in a number of cases show up as residents of Clarke County after 1801. And some names recorded in the 1780s in Wilkes County appear later in the 1780s and 1790s of Greene County, and in the early 1800s, in Clarke County; some examples include . . . John Fielder. . . The pattern of appearance of names thus suggest a migration path from Wilkes County through Greene County to Clarke County which later became Oconee County as the frontier moved deeper into Indian country. Given such a migration path, we can conclude that a number of those Greene County settlers who fought with the Indians during the Oconee War would end up being among the earliest settlers of Oconee County."
