We meet special people in our lives in surprising ways. I knew Ms. Gwen Evans, a resident of Mulberry Grove Assisted Living in Statham, for several years until her death on January 20, 2009. I did not know her husband, Jesse, but saw his picture on her wall. I knew some of their children for decades.

Gwen & JesseEvans
.
Jesse and Gwen Evans had five children: Larry Evans (Winder), Harry Evans (Loganville), Ronnie Evans (Cartersville), Greg Evans (Statham), Pat Peters (Fayetteville) and Kathy Mitchell (New Orleans). I knew the sons as far back as High School. Larry and Harry were twins and played basketball, graduating in 1960 from Oconee County High School. Ronnie retired from the Southern Co where he worked with Economic Development efforts – we interacted in my County Commission years.
.
Greg was a radio dispatcher in Sheriff Charles Holcomb’s day in the early 70’s. I helped him with his ham radio club and other issues over the years. He is a special & long-time friend who has worked with recycling in recent years. Greg and I have been close for decades and his mother knew it. We became friends at Mulberry Grove.

Mrs. Evans was a very sweet person who always smiled. We visited her several times a year and sent cards. Betty and I thought a lot of Ms. Evans and were saddened by her death.
.
In April, some of Kathy’s friends planted a tree in Harahan (New Orleans) in memory of Jesse and Gwen Evans. It is a fitting tribute. Greg was able to get the picture and article to me and I am happy to share it.

Mark and Kathy Mitchell look over the red maple planted in memory of her father, Jesse Evans, on Friday at LaSalle Park in Metairie during a special dedication ceremony sponsored by Jefferson Beautification Inc. (JBI). Eight trees as well as two benches were dedicated at the park. Trees were dedicated in memory of Paul Emenes, Gwen Evans, Jesse Evans, Sydney Lottinger, David Owens, Joyce Owens, Gwen Soto arid James Treece. The two benches were dedicated in memory of Emenes and Soto. That same day at the park, JBI hosted its annual Earth Day Educational program. Fifth-graders from six east bank schools attended the event, learning about bird watching, tree pruning and how trees function. JBI board member Mary Ann Joyner chaired the Earth Day program.
