Dawson Vacation 2011- Memphis, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas – Part 1

Betty, Jennifer and I resumed our goal of seeing new states for our 2011 vacation.  None of us had been to Arkansas or Oklahoma.   Prior to this trip, Jennifer had been to 44 states, Betty to 42 and Wendell to 43.  We researched things to see and decided to drive through Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana rather than flying.   We avoided losing the better part of two days in airports!  Also, we could pack what we wanted and we could stop along the way when we wanted to.

Our car and hotel rooms were air conditioned along with Welcome Centers, Visitors Centers and several museums.   We were thankful that we had no mechanical problems although we did have a tire go bad in Bossier City, LA, that required a visit to Sears for a replacement.

Our trip started on I–20 West to Birmingham then north to Memphis so we could use I-40 W for our trip to Arkansas and Oklahoma.   We knew there were a number of interesting places in Memphis and spent the first night there.

.

Along the way, we noted many closed buildings, vacant and old, dilapidated billboards indicating the Recession is widespread.   We noted that gas was about the same price in all the states we visited.

Most of the states had much better maintained highway right of ways.   ARK and OK had mowers working on Saturday and Sunday.   Some appeared to be local farmers who possibly contracted for a strip of interstate.   Georgia should look at that program.   Locally, the Watkinsville By-Pass and GA 316 get pretty ‘woolly’ before they are cut.    The difference makes an impression on tourists.
