Governor Unveils $ 324 Million Highway Bond Projects--LITTLE IN NORTHEAST GA !

Wendell Dawson, Editor, AVOC, Inc.

 .

This story vividly illustrates the politically impotence of Northeast Georgia and the Athens Area. I attended a regional meeting recently in which area leaders told a state official that there was local concern about the lack of appointments to major state boards and commissions of Northeast Georgians .

 .

During the election cycle, they come to the area including the Oconee Civic Center . However, where is the money for U S 441 in Northeast GA; upgrade of GA 316; upgrade of GA Hwy 15 in Oconee and Greene Counties and others?

 .

Local officials and State Senators and Representatives are not doing enough. With a Republican Governor, they should be more effective.

 .

Transportation needs in this area are not keeping pace with the population growth and with other areas of the state.

 .

Citizens should question their elected officials and Party leaders about the situation.

 .

By Tom Crawford

 .

Gov. Sonny Perdue laid out the details Thursday of his plan to spend $ 324 million in bond revenues on highway projects across Georgia, many of them in rural areas outside metro Atlanta .

The Georgia Report and List Continued..........

 .

Part of the money will be spent to improve arterial roads and relieve traffic congestion in Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding, and Rockdale counties, which are under the gun to meet federal air quality standards.

 .

The bulk of the funding will pay for highway projects that are part of the Governor’s Road Improvement Program (GRIP) to improve access between transportation corridors and stimulate economic development in rural parts of the state.

 .

"We are funding transportation projects that will increase mobility for metro area commuters stuck in traffic," Perdue said. "And the GRIP projects that we have targeted will improve access to major roadways, which is critical for the economic development of rural."

The projects announced Thursday are part of Perdue’s " Gets Going" transportation plan that will cost a projected $ 424 million. The governor will announce other road bond projects totaling almost $ 100 million on Monday and details of a telecommuting program on Tuesday.
