Small, Simple Things Can Do Much to Warm the Hearts of Lonely People

The Real Christmas Spirit

By Wendell Dawson, Editor, AVOC, Inc.

Over the years, I have frequently visited relatives, friends and clients in nursing home. There are many lonely, forgotten persons in many homes.

Annually, many youth groups help remember the residents with Christmas presents and visits. I am familiar with a program sponsored by the Helping Hands Club at Lost Mountain Middle School at Kennesaw, Cobb Coun ty, Georgia. The children make special cards from old Christmas Cards, prepare little trinkets and sugar free candy in bags etc to be distributed by the Social Services Departments of the nursing homes.

It was my pleasure to deliver grocery bags full of these thoughtful items to six area nursing homes on Christmas Eve. Such acts are very much appreciated.

AVOC encourages young people and their parents to "adopt a friend" in area nursing homes and remember them on special occasions. It can be very satisfying.
