Bear Creek Reservoir Attracts State-Wide Attention

.

By Wendell Dawson, Editor, AVOC, Inc

.

The comments of Jim Wooten (AJC May 24, 2002) about Bear Creek Regional Reservoir are typical of many in recent years as the Bear Creek Project progressed toward completion.

.

It is a VIVID example of local leadership and self-reliance that others will want to emulate.

.

The Authority worked hard to avoid State involvement and did the project without State Assistance. This writer was more than a little surprised that the Authority wanted the Democratic Governor to be the speaker at the Dedication- planned just before the 2002 General Election. It will attract attention but may give the wrong impression.

Thinking Right: Rats, Health Care, (BEAR CREEK)

.

By Jim Wooten

.

The 505-acre Bear Creek Reservoir in Jackson County, built for drinking water by officials in four counties, is a refreshing example of something you don't see anymore: local people solving a local problem with local money. They got no federal aid. And other than Corps of Engineers permission, no federal intervention. State, either. Nobody stands on their own two feet nowadays. And yet the four -- Jackson, Athens-Clarke, Barrow and Oconee -- did. Smart and self-reliant, too.
